The Lionel 229 Minneapolis and St. Louis AB Diesel Locomotive Set from 1961-62. The 229 Minneapolis & St. Louis (M. & St. L.) alco diesel is a somewhat unusual diesel from the early 1960’s as it was produced in two different configurations. For 1961, Lionel sold the 229 as a single A unit. Then beginning in 1962, Lionel added a B unit and the 229 was sold as an AB unit for the year. Therefore, there are few fewer B units than A’s making the AB diesel significantly harder to locate than a single A unit. As with most of the later Alco series diesels, the front apron is usually the weak point and are frequently found cracked or completely missing. Finding a unit with intact struts is difficult. Features include a red painted body with white lettering and a white side stripe, single-axle Magnetraction, two-position E-unit, headlight, horn plus non-operating front & rear couplers.
